A couple of years ago Tim Rowley, a local resident, began witnessing an astounding number of marginalized families living in homes without beds and furniture. He saw families exhausting their weekly income on food, housing and gas bills which resulted in children sleeping on floors, couches and piles of clothes due to the inability of being able to afford essential furniture items. Beds for Kids was started as a result.
They first started by using garages to store goods, then renting small storage places but the need grew as did the supply of furniture donated. They currently operate in a warehouse donated for their use at no charge by a generous contributor. Almost all work is performed by dedicated volunteers. Beds for Kids is teaming up with other non-profit agencies, faith organizations, individuals and businesses to supplement the continuum of services to the economically disadvantaged families in Charlotte.
Recipients of Beds for Kids services are referred from specific partnering agencies in Charlotte. Currently those partnering agencies include A Child’s Place, Charlotte Family Housing and the YWCA’s Families Together program. These agencies have evaluated the families and helped them get to the point of having their own apartment.
Beds for Kids serves to strengthen the continuum of services to marginalized children and their families in Charlotte. As Beds for Kids clients receive multifaceted assistance towards future self-sufficiency, donated furniture is delivered to the client’s homes in order to increase the families’ growing stability and encourage their trek towards independence. Households that previously lacked a bed to sleep on, a kitchen table to eat at, or a dresser to put clothes in are provided for by Beds for Kids. Furniture makes it a real home.
Beds for Kids relies on community giving, both financially and hard goods, to best serve Charlotte’s vast needs. An individual or corporate donor donates their new or gently used bed or furniture to Beds for Kids through a scheduled pick up or drop off at Beds for Kids facilities. Volunteers then work to clean, prepare, and organize the donations as close to like-new quality as possible.
