Charitable Fundraising

The Philanthropic Committee of the Carolina Women’s Club plans and executes 2 or 3 fundraisers each year for organizations that meet the criteria established by our club.

Members of the Philanthropic Committee select the charities to benefit from this each year.  And of course, members will participate in a number of events planned and executed by other organizations throughout the year as well.

The Bill Cummings Concert on June 3, 2016 to benefit ANSWER Scholarships, Inc. was a huge success!

Bill Cummings Concert benefitting Answer Scholarship

“What a fantastic evening at the CWC Swing into Summer fundraising concert at TPC Piper Glen! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us for a great philanthropic charity event…..everyone loved it! “(Jan Jimeson, past president of PGWC)

Guests won lottery prizes like spa visits, golf for 4, a painting of your pet, gift baskets from local merchants and scheduled future dinners with groups of friends all to raise money for the charity.
We had several scholarship recipients present to tell their stories. Recipients are women with children, who are returning to school to earn a degree while also working and raising their family.
ANSWER provides a scholarship and so much more in support to help these women.

On December 7 we will have a luncheon to benefit Safe Alliance, the Battered Women’s Shelter. This luncheon is a tradition for our members and it grows larger every year. In the past we have furnished a room at the new shelter, bought items badly needed to run the shelter, and always we stock the Christmas Store so residents can shop for their family.

2015 had new and different fundraisers

We started off with Classroom Central asking us to help get some notebook paper, pens and pencils. Seems the shelves were bare. We took this need to our neighborhoods in different South Charlotte communities where we have CWC members. Cindy Heisler managed the program and delivered the supplies. About 10 neighborhoods participated.  Boxes were placed on porches, emails were sent to friends and neighbors by the collectors and supplies began coming in. We ran the drive for 6 weeks and collected 2 SUV loads of supplies. Additionally we received $1,100 in checks that will be big help for Classroom Central. We have no idea how many VIC Cards were linked to Classroom Central for future donations of funds from Harris Teeter.

Golf Fundraiser for YWCA in August

The TPC Piper Glen Club hosted a fundraiser golf tournament and dinner party in August for our YWCA and two other charities. We worked with the TPC Club to make this tournament a success. We expect this will become an annual event. Comments from attendees were very positive about the tournament and the dinner.

Two more major fundraisers happened in  2015

Furnishing a room at the new Women’s Shelter:

The CWC ended the year with a really big bang. Stacie Salisbury and a group of dedicated volunteers furnished and decorated a room at Charlotte’s battered women’s shelter. This beautiful, brand-spanking-new, 80-bed facility in West Charlotte is now named the Clyde and Ethel Dickson Domestic Violence Shelter.

The CWC committed to furnishing an emergency intake room at the shelter. Since this is a room that will be used upon arrival, Stacie and her crew wanted to create a peaceful, serene space; a calm in the storm of life. The design is centered around a large 4-by-6 foot abstract painting of a shoreline, with waves lapping the sand. The room’s colors reflect the palette of the painting with hues of soft blues and whites. A chair and ottoman offers a place of respite.

The team got dirty and decorated the space; they made beds, assembled high chairs and hung drapery, art, shower curtains and towel rods. They folded, plumped and organized. The team is proud of the space they created, and rightly so! As they say, a picture paints a thousand words.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make decorating the room at the new Domestic Violence Shelter possible. We raised $3,255 to furnish the room for the women’s shelter. You also sent additional wash clothes, towels, blankets, coffeepots, pillows, throws, toiletries, sheet sets, etc., to be used in the CWC’s room at the Shelter.

We had our highest attendance ever at our December luncheon. More than 130 women attended the luncheon for the Battered Women’s Shelter. In addition to raising the funds to design and furnish the new room at the shelter, CWC also sent more than 600 gifts for the Battered Women’s Shelter holiday store and contributed $1,245 for the shelter to use as they needed.
